Planning renovation waste before the work starts
A practical starting point for organising renovation waste, choosing a waste category and preparing for skip-bin delivery.
A renovation creates several decisions before the first load of rubbish appears. Write down the materials you expect to remove, the approximate quantity and the order in which the work will happen. Share that list when asking for a bin so the waste category can be checked before you book.
Identify the materials first
A kitchen strip-out, a garden excavation and a household clear-out can need different arrangements. Keep heavy materials and anything uncertain on your list rather than describing everything as general rubbish. Ask the operator how each material should be handled.
Plan the space as well as the waste
Choose a proposed bin location and explain how the truck would reach it. Include access photos if useful. Agree on the delivery and collection timing around your trades so the bin is available when needed.
Ask where the waste will go
EPA Victoria explains that renovation waste must go to a facility authorised to receive it, and engaging a contractor does not remove the homeowner's responsibilities. Ask questions about the intended destination and retain the booking information. Read EPA Victoria's renovation-waste guidance.
