Why waste separation matters for resource recovery

Understand the difference between collecting waste and recovering materials, and the questions to ask before organising a bin.

Removing waste from a site is only one stage of its journey. The material mix, its condition and the receiving facility all affect what happens next. A useful starting question is: what exactly are we putting in this load?

Discuss the mix before collection

Tell the operator whether the job involves packaging, timber, metal, masonry or a mixture. Ask whether separate loads would suit the project and whether the receiving facility has specific acceptance conditions. Do not assume that everything described as recyclable can go into the same container.

Understand the next stage

EPA Victoria gives examples of construction and demolition waste being taken to a licensed landfill or a permissioned resource-recovery facility. Its examples also explain how separated materials can move into further use, subject to the relevant requirements. Those examples describe industry pathways; they do not establish a recovery rate for a particular GetBins load. Read EPA Victoria's examples.

Ask for clear information

For a business project, identify any reporting you need before booking. Ask what records the operator can provide rather than assuming a recycling certificate or a particular recovery percentage is included.

Contact GetBins with your material list to discuss the service suited to your project.
